The topic for today is Forces. We started the class with a discussion of what a force is and then we worked on the following:

Completion of the Reading and Note Taking Guide for Chapter 10 section 1 (The Nature of Forces)

Homework: The Nature of Forces 10.1 Review and Reinforce
Motion Quiz corrections (due tomorrow)

Today we started discussing stars. They are classified by their size, color, temperature, chemical composition and brightness. Our own sun is a medium-sized, medium-bright, on the cooler side (5,500 degrees Celcius) star. If we were able to travel at the speed of light (300,000 km/sec) we would be able to reach the sun in 8 minutes!

Tonight’s homework is to finish Reading and Note Taking Guide questions 2 - 5 and 9 - 19 on pages 264 - 267.

Tomorrow we will begin with the life cycle of a star. Can you say Supernova?

Create an Atom
Extra Credit Project

Possible Points: 10 – 20 depending upon the difficulty of the atom chosen

Project:
1. Choose an element from the periodic table with an atomic number between 7 and 18 (Nitrogen to Argon). There are 12 elements to choose from, so choose wisely.
2. Create a 3-dimensional model of the element, including:
Protons
Neutrons
Electrons
Electron levels/clouds

3. Your model can be constructed out of any materials as long as they will not rot or smell. No drawings or computer created images will be accepted!
4. Your model MUST be able to be hung from the ceiling, so plan for that.
5. Once your model has been constructed, create a sign (no larger than 10cm x 10cm) that will hang from your model that gives the following information:
Name of the element
Element symbol
Atomic Number
Atomic Mass
Mass Number
Website code *(see below)

Due Date:
Monday, November 26, 2007. NO EXCEPTIONS!
No late projects will be accepted so TELL YOUR FRIENDS!

Your periodic table is due, completely filled out by Monday. We will color it in class on Monday.

Looking at the Groups and Metal, Nonmetals, Semimetals Information Chart are due Tuesday. You will have a test on Chapter 4 that day, so you may use them to study.

An EXTRA CREDIT assignment will be posted here Wednesday. Look for details Wednesday.

Today we are examining some nonmetals and semimetals and reviewing some information that can be gained from the periodic table.

Today we finished making the Periodic Tables of Transportation and turned them in with a written paragraph about how your organized your groups.

In class, we started “Who Am I?”, a worksheet that uses clues from the Periodic Table to solve which elements are being described. If you did not finish it in class, it is homework.

Tonight’s other homework assignment is “Organizing the Elements” which uses Chapter 4, Section 2. Be sure to read it (either in your textbook or in the online textbook) to help you answer the questions. Who is that Mendeleev person anyway?

Do not forget…all metals in groups 1 - 12 need to be filled in on your periodic table by Thursday, 11/15.

Also…Chapter 4 test on the periodic table and atoms in next Tuesday, 11/20.
